NOTE: Regardless of whether you have got Windows 7 32bit or 64 installed you will be using the 32bit version of VirtualDub
The reason for this is mandatory driver signing for 64bit versions of Windows
As getting a driver signed costs $$$ it is unlikely that we'll ever see 64bit versions of AC-3 ACM or LameMP3 ACM
Don't despair, the 32bit version of VirtualDub works pretty well on 64bit Windows
So you'll still be able to join, edit and re-encode those DivX/XVid/H264 based AVI files of yours
1st, Lets download what what we need to get this job done
VirtualDub installation
VirtualDub comes as simple ZIP file
You'll need to create the folder where you want to install Virtual
On 32bit systems I suggest
C:\Program Files\VirtualDub
On 64bit systems I suggest
C:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDub
Extract the files from the ZIP you downloaded and copy to the aforementioned folder
Right-Click VirtualDub.exe and Select Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut)
The easy part is done
x264 Video For Windows
This is a simple double-click and follow the prompts until complete
XVid Installation
This is pretty straight forward too
It will prompt you if you want it support various format playback
All boxes are unchecked by default - leave them that way
Windows 7 is already providing support for these
So you can accept all the defaults
LameMP3 ACM Setup
LameMP3 ACM comes as a ZIP file
You'll need to extract/copy the contents of that file to a temporary folder
To keep this simple create the folder C:\TMP
Copy/Extract the contents of the ZIP file to C:\TMP
For 32bit versions of Windows 7 installation is simple
Right-Click LameACM.inf and Select Install
For 64bit versions of Windows 7 installation will take a bit more work
Right-Click Start > All Program > Accessories > Command Prompt
Select Run As Administrator
Click Yes when prompted by security
A DOS box will appear
Type C:
Hit Enter key
Type CD\
Hit Enter key
Type CD Windows\SysWOW64
Hit Enter key
Type CMD
Hit Enter key
Type rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 C:\TMP\lameACM.inf
Hit Enter key
Type Exit
Hit Enter key
Type Exit (yes you need to do it twice)
Hit Enter key
Delete the contents of C:\TMP
MP3 encoding support is now available to VirtualDub
Time to move on to the last piece
AC-3 ACM Setup
AC-3 ACM comes as a ZIP file
You'll need to extract/copy the contents of that file to a temporary folder
Navigate to the x86 Subfolder
You'll see the following 2 install files:
Install on 32-bit Windows.bat
and
Install on 64-bit Windows.bat
Right Click on the 1 that is appropriate for your version of Windows 7
Select Run As Administrator
Click OK
A DOS box will briefly pop-up and disappear
AC-3 encoding support is now available to VirtualDub
Your work is now done
It wasn't that painful....well maybe it was if you're a 64bit user :]
